Easy Ways to Stay Sustainable Without Breaking the Bank

April 24, 2025 Easy Ways to Stay Sustainable Without Breaking the Bank

Hey hey! Grace here from Get Back and today, we’re talking about SUSTAINABILITY. Yes, that means being a good human doing good things like recycling - but let’s be real, it’s way more than just tossing your Yerba can in the right bin.

There are tons of ways to stay sustainable that don’t require a major lifestyle change or a huge budget. Some of them are actually kinda fun. So I’m stoked you’re here and reading this. That’s a good sign, right?

Let’s get into it.

1. Ditch Single Plastics (PLEASE)

We’re not saying you have to be the person who brings their own metal straw everywhere (unless that’s your thing - respect. Save the turtles, right?! 🐢). But, bringing a reusable water bottle, using washable containers instead of Ziploc bags, or skipping the plastic fork & keeping a reusable set in your car? It really adds up.

So while were talkin’ alternatives, here’s a few of the team’s fave sustainable swaps:

  • Cotton market tote bags vs. single use plastic bags 👜

These are a MUST for Farmer’s Market trips. They’re lightweight, easy to carry, affordable, & let you spend $17 on a green juice with ease. Dang, just what I needed… 😐

  • Coconut bowls + bamboo utensils vs. paper plates & plastic utensils 🥥🍴

Genuinely, once you eat out of a coconut bowl, there’s no going back. Try an açaí bowl in one and your life will change. It tastes better for some reason (not backed with science, just vibes). And keep a set of bamboo utensils in your car, I promise it’s better than plastic & you won’t ever be disappointed when the takeout place forgets to include utensils.

  • Refillable soap dispensers vs. disposable soap dispensers 🧼

Funny I’m saying this, because I literally just bought one 3 days ago. Hey, I’m still learning too. But for real, why are we buying a whole new dispenser every time we run out of soap? Get a refillable one, and either buy soap in bulk orrr find a local refillary. If you’re local to Oceanside like we are, check out Senora Refillery - they’ve got all the good stuff.

2. Shop small, vintage, or second-hand

Fast fashion = not it. You know that $5 tank top isn’t made sustainably (or ethically) and definitely isn’t made to last either. Thrift it, get it second-hand, or shop support a small biz 👋. It’s better for the planet AND your closet.

3. Clean your corner of the Earth

Earth Month really gets us fired up to leave places better than we found them. And if you live by the ocean like us, you probably get that feeling in your stomach too when you see trash all over the beach. Not cool. So on your next beach walk, pick up a few pieces of trash. Karma will getcha back & Mother Earth will thank you 🌎. Peep our team at our last beach clean-up below. Fun times :)                                  Grace & Kelsie at Get Back Beach Clean-up

4. Keep your jewelry sustainable too

We like to keep things classic + rooted in tradition here at Get Back. That means you’re buying pieces that won’t be thrown out after one season just because the trend is over. St. Christopher Surf Medallions have been in style for over half a century (& we plan on keeping it that way for another 50 years + some more). Check out a few of my personal favorites from GB:

Other than our jewelry, our packaging is planet-friendly too. Bio-degradable, even. Cool, huh? And we include a reusable jewelry pouch in every order for our fellow travelers. These are PERFECT for bringing your jewelry on-the-go. No tangling or losing your pieces. We ❤️ them.

Anddd that’s a wrap! If you’ve been wanting to make more sustainable choices, start small. That’s where all good things start :) & we’re proud of you for even reading this blog. Means you're on the way to making the Earth that much happier.

Alrighty you. Have a good week, make good choices (for the planet), & I’ll catch ya later 👋.
