Back in the day, people used to exchange St. Christophers as a symbol of goin’ steady. Fast forward a few decades, that tradition’s taken on a new life too. These days, we’re trading them with our best friends also!
If you know us, you know we’re suckers for a good tradition - especially one that keeps your people close, even when they’re not physically there. So today, we’re showing you how to make a friendship bracelet with a St. Christopher charm woven right on. Let’s get into it…
What you’ll need:
- Your bestie’s favorite St. Christopher colorway + yours
- Scissors
- Embroidery thread or cord (whatever colors you like)
- Tape (to keep your bracelet steady while you work)
-
Your hands + a playlist you love
Step 1:
Cut 3 strands of cord, about 5 ft each (trust us - extra is better than not enough). Line them up so they’re even, fold them in half, and tie a knot that leaves room to create a loop. Tape the loop down to your table.
Step 2:
Pick one strand to start with. Make a number 4 shape by laying that strand over the others, then tuck it underneath and pull it through the loop you just made - creating a knot. Pull tight.
Step 3:
Keep tying that same knot with the same strand until it’s about ¾ inch long. Then switch to a different strand and repeat the process. Your bracelet will start to twist which means you’re right on track ;)
Step 4:
Once the bracelet is about half the circumference around your wrist, it’s time to add the charm. Slide your St. Christopher onto all but one of the strands - that leftover strand is the one you’ll keep knotting with. That way, your charm stays locked in and centered while you keep the knots going.
Step 5:
Keep knotting like you were before, switching colors if you want. Stop once the bracelet is just long enough to wrap around your wrist comfortably.
Step 6:
Trim the ends, but leave about 1.5 to 2 inches of loose string on each side. You’ll use those to tie the bracelet on.
Step 7:
Loop the ends through your starting loop and tie it off - and just like that, you’ve made a friendship bracelet with a lil extra meaning :)
Optional Add-Ons:
-
Beads or shells between knots
-
Different knotting patterns for texture
-
Layer it with your other Get Back pieces - necklaces, chains, you name it
As you can probably tell, my bracelet is nowhere near perfect… but that’s kinda the point! Your bracelet might be a little uneven or a little too long, but it’s yours. It’s theirs. And it’s about keeping the people you love close, even when you’re physically far apart <3
