Holiday on the Coast Edition

It’s December and December means HOLIDAYS!! With that comes all the amazing and fun holiday traditions;) I'm sure you've heard about the ugly Christmas sweaters and the holiday parties, so we wanted to fill ya in on our own tradition here at GB. Not necessarily a ‘holiday’ tradition, but the tradition of our surf medallions that makes our brand US!

The tradition of St. Christopher dates back to the 3rd century if you wanna get specific! He is known to be the patron saint of travelers. Jump WAYYY forward to the 60s and 70s, surfers and travelers alike used to wear a St. Christopher medallion as a symbol of protection in the water or on their travels! Couples also used to exchange them with each other as a symbol of ‘goin steady’ with each other. Then jump forward a lil bit more to the 90s and Get Back Necklaces was born;) We strive to carry on the traditions of surfers and travelers by creating unique Saint Christopher medals for anyone and everyone.

Now don’t think we skipped out on the holiday traditions though. We have a small close knit team here at GB and I was able to ask each team member if they had a favorite holiday tradition, old or new;) Here’s some responses and photos from our team!:

Kinsley (Product Designer): “Every year, my family drives about an hour out of town to a local farm with a southern, family-style restaurant and a hayride through their Christmas lights display. My family is pretty big, so we usually end up at these long tables, passing dishes back and forth, and there’s something really cozy and wholesome about it. Somehow it’s always FREEZING on the night we go, so we bundle up for the hayride and almost always grab hot chocolate to stay warm!”

Kristie (Product Manager): “I grew up in Los Angeles and we would go drive around the upper Hastings Ranch area of Pasadena where each street had their own theme for Christmas lights. We would blast Christmas music and then go to Twohey's, a restaurant in Pasadena, to get hot fudge sundaes. As I got older my friends and my brother's friends would come, and eventually I got to take my daughters as well!”

Gabe (Ecommerce Coordinator): “A holiday tradition my family has done since I was a kid would be opening presents at midnight on Christmas eve. We'd technically celebrate Christmas twice haha, my family gets together on Christmas Eve and we eat, play games, have fun and open presents at midnight. On actual Christmas Day we'd spend the day eating leftovers and hanging out with each other.”

Jasmine (Junior Graphic Designer): “One tradition my family does is go to Candy Cane Lane. It’s basically a whole neighborhood area that decorates every year so everyone just walks around and people sell hot chocolate sometimes lol. Some people often have themed decorations so this house had all animals, I loved this little mouse the most :) Hopefully I see him again this year<3”

Griselda (Warehouse Manager): “We spend time with our family on Christmas Eve. After dinner, we build a bonfire and tell stories, usually the funniest ones that have happened over the years, while drinking our traditional Mexican punch. We wear Christmas sweaters or pjs, and at midnight we wish each other a Merry Christmas, and the children start opening their Christmas presents. On the 25th, during the day, we watch movies with the family and eat lots of tamales, haha or drive around to see Christmas lights as a family.”

Nick (VP/Owner): “We would always get to open 1 present the night before xmas and it was ALWAYS something really small/simple/practical like socks or PJ's lol but just enough to tide us over 1 more night before getting to open the rest of our gifts :)”

Kelsie (Social Media Coordinator): “Every Christmas my family has a party on Christmas eve and we always play homemade games like a giant saran wrap ball full of little gifts or a DIY Price is Right sort of thing! My mom and I also always wrap gifts together and listen to old christmas music on her record player;)”

Francisco (Wholesale Assistant): “We'd meet up at the host's house, and everyone either brings food or cooks food on Christmas Eve. We'd then gather everyone around the christmas tree around midnight and start opening presents, beginning with the younger kids and working our way up. On Christmas Day, we'd hang out, eat, and pretty much do it all over again.”

Marisela (Warehouse Assistant): “For Christmas Eve we will gather together to celebrate Baby Jesus, we will do a mini posada which means Christmas Inn. Unfortunately, I don't go by that tradition any more. But it will always be something to remember when I was a kid”
